Happy World Environment Day! At McGruff Safe Kit, we believe in the importance of protecting not only your child, but the world they live in as well. Whether you’re the crème de la crème of recycling or don’t even remember the last time you composted, as a parent, you need to instill healthy “green” habits in your child as young as possible. But have no fear, the task is not as cumbersome as it appears! After doing some research, we’ve upcycled the best possible tips and tricks for you and your child.
Turn off the lights. When you’re leaving a room for a longer period, remind your child to turn off the lights! Also, invest in energy-saving lightbulbs. Drag your kid to Home Depot, and tell them – in a very hushed and serious tone – you’re both going on a secret adventure to save the world.
Turn off the water. Remember that Barney song about brushing your teeth without letting the water run? Check it out here [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cRDcTjWvzZA]. We’re all about conserving water, and using only when it’s necessary. When bathing or brushing, teach your child that they should leave it off until they need it.
Clean up and recycle. Cut down on the amount of plastic you use in the family. And, if you do, remind your child to always recycle. On top of that, teach your child to always clean up after themselves if they leave a mess behind. To get your child in more of a go-green mindset, buy a mini reusable tote just for your child. They’ll really feel like they’re making a difference. When you go to the grocery store – with your own reusable tote bag in hand – you and your child will be an immovable force against nature (err, with nature).
Grow organics on your own. Don’t worry, we’re not trying to forcibly convert you into a granola yoga type of mother (Can I service anyone with some organic quinoa?). However, it’s gratifying to see the fruits of your hard labor turn into delicious food! If you don’t have space for a garden, you can opt for growing herbs. While fun for both you and your child, it is also a fantastic opportunity for them to learn about the planet. Check out this blog we wrote about gardening with your kids!
Make your own compost. Along with making your own garden, you can easily make your own compost at home. Encourage your child to put any organic waste, such as vegetable skin, banana peels or paper, in the compost box.
Enjoy nature. Sounds simple, doesn’t it? That’s because it is! Going on hikes, walks, or camping trips are cost-efficient and help your child appreciate the planet and being outside.
Connect with your community. See if there are any local events or services that you and your child can join to help make the world a cleaner place. For example, Habitat for Humanity has great eco-friendly volunteer opportunities. Under “Find your Local Habitat,” you can easily find a center near or in your local city to volunteer!
As said before, protecting the environment and your child are things every parent needs to consider. We’ve got you covered on recycling, so let’s make sure your kid is taken care of. With the McGruff Safe Kit, it stores all your child’s valuable information – like fingerprints, DNA, hair samples, and photos – in case the unthinkable should occur. Request your free kit today!
